Wow! I am just now getting a chance to catch my breath and look back on 2018. We had an incredible year. Between record sales, a tremendous showing at The State Fair of Texas and all of our customers' success, we have so much to be grateful for! 2019 has started off with everyone getting ready for the Super Bowl (seriously - I thought wings were the go to party food, but I was wrong!) and making sure they have fresh spices for their super bowl of chili. See what I did there?? I have two Competition Chili Classes scheduled for February and March - one red and one green. I will post details as soon as possible. Both classes will be held at the Sokol in Ennis and you will be able to sign up via the website.
I've revamped the website with a few new sections and of course, championship recipes. Congratulations to all of our friends and customers who kicked butt in St. Louis and Terlingua. We even had a few Competition Chili 101 attendees show up in the Top 10 and Final Table Behind the Store. And a huge shout out to Mild Bill himself, Gary Brignon (5th Place TICC) and Zoe Brignon (20th Place TICC - her first time in Terlingua. She auto qualified when she won Texas Open in February 2018) for representing in Terlingua. This wife and mama couldn't be happier!!
We have some really exciting changes coming to Gunpowder Foods. Most of you know that Gary and I have a teenage daughter and she is super active in band (clarinet, alto clarinet, and piano) and choir. My focus has been and always will be my family - especially Paige - and it's important for me to attend her activities as often as I can. Because of the crazy busy year we had in 2018, I hired a full time employee who has been a godsend. I wouldn't have survived this past year without her! I look forward to the continued growth and success of Gunpowder Foods and am anxious to share the really cool stuff we have planned for 2019 and beyond. As always, Keep it Spicy!
*WE WILL BE CLOSED 10/29-11/2 WHILE ATTEND THE ORIGINAL TERLINGUA INTERNATIONAL CCO. ORDERS PLACED AFTER 12 PM CST ON FRIDAY 10/26 WILL BE FILLED WHEN WE REOPEN ON 11/5. THERE WILL BE A DELAY!*
We are just five days away from the opening of the Great State Fair of Texas! We are getting everything ready so that we are fully stocked and ready to go next Friday. I won't be in the store Tuesday or Friday, so please keep that in mind when placing your order. I've also posted the Sampling Schedule - those are the days I'll be at the State Fair handing out chili samples. It is listed below on the previous blog post. Please - do not wait until the last minute to place an order. Yes, we are super busy and there are a lot of orders coming in on a daily basis for cook offs all over the country that include Tolbert, ICS and CASI. Please be patient and rest assured that you will receive your spices in time for your event. If you have a specific date that you need you order, all it takes is a note on your order or a quick email to let me know. I'll make sure to pull your order and get it filled and shipped in time. Disclaimer: that does not mean it's ok to place an order at 10pm on a Wednesday night and expect to have it for Saturday without some sort of heads up - and even then there's no guarantee I can make it happen. That's just wrong on so many levels. If you have a last minute request, be sure to choose Express Shipping so that we can ship your order via the quickest method possible. Again - just communicate with me and everything will work out.
While getting ready for the State Fair and filling the non stop orders coming in (THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!), I've listed four new products on the website. I've added three new ground chili peppers and a new chili powder blend. You can check them out here:
I also have three products in the R&D stage that I'm working diligently on finishing up so that I can add them to the website as well. I am really excited about these new products and can't wait to share them with all of you. As always - Keep it Spicy!

The State Fair will soon be upon us and someone (can't imagine who!!) went crazy and signed up for 17 sample days throughout the fair! I know we are going to need some help on some of those days. I'll post the sampling schedule in the next few weeks and I'm happy to offer $50 in free spices to anyone who wants to volunteer to help serve chili and talk about Mild Bill's for a few hours! Keep it Spicy!

I'm excited to have finally finished the new website. I think it will be easier for customers to place orders and most importantly, I think the shipping costs will be a lot more accurate. You may notice that there are a few products not listed on the new site. Some of omissions are temporary (jellies, for example. I'm out of stock and need to make more) and will be added to the site once they're available again. Some items have been phased out - Grand Prize, San Antonio Light and San Antonio Dark. Grand Prize and San Antonio Light are custom blends - I can always blend those products and get them to you. All you have to do is ask. I took San Antonio Dark out of the inventory for a few reasons - one being that it is virtually identical to Mild Bill's Dark. It just didn't make any sense to continue to carry products that had the exact same ingredients in the exact same quantities
I've also removed Ghost Pepper, Trinidad Scorpion and Carolina Reaper ground chili peppers from the website. Competition chili cooks don't typically use these products in their chili recipes and from a business standpoint, it wasn't a smart financial decision to continue carrying inventory that wasn't being purchased enough to justify the cost associated with keeping it in stock .
Even though I've removed a few products, I have two new ground chili peppers to add to the website along with four new blends currently in the R&D phase. The ground chili peppers will be available by the end of the week. The new blends will be ready to go before the beginning of the State Fair. I always like to debut new products around that time.
Again, I thank all of you for your continued business and support. I've still got a few things to tweak on the website so please be patient while I finish adding recipes, upcoming events and info about the Terlingua Verde CCO. Should you have issues checking out or need help with a product selection, don't hesitate to call or email me.
